Shortening the Drop

This service is only available for customers who have bought a pair of curtains online or in the store.

All sizes stated are approximations only.

The measuring guide below is meant to be a guide only and the final measurements shall be chosen by you.

If you require any further help then please ring on 0113 2840655.

Alternatively email Chiltern Mills on internet@chilternmills.co.uk

Chiltern Mills recommend that you use a metal tape if possible as it gives a more accurate size.

Note that you can have any remnants sent with your order if requested or why not let us use the remnants to make matching tie backs and cushions if there is sufficient material.

Position and Length of the Pole

For many people the pole will already be in place above the top of the window frame.

If there is no pole then ideally it would be placed 15cm (6") above the top of the window frame.

The pole should be wider than your window frame by 15-20cms (6-8") at each end.

Measuring the Width of the Pencil Pleat Curtains

Curtain Poles have two components – the pole itself and the finials that are added to each end for decoration and to stop the rings sliding off.

After you have positioned the pole and placed the finials on the end, measure the distance between the inside of the two finials to get the width of one curtain.

So say the measurement that you get is 158cm (62”), then you will have to order the next size up which in this case would usually be the 167cm (66") standard size.

On the web site this size is shown in the size drop down box and it is this size that should be selected.

To get a full gathered look you will need two curtains of the same size which you will receive when you order any curtains which are only sold and priced in pairs.

Measuring the Drop of the Pencil Pleat for Alteration

Windowsills and floors are not always level so Chiltern Mills recommend measuring this in 3 places.

The best places are at the ends of the window and in the centre.

To measure the drop correctly, measure the distance from the top of the pole.

If you want the curtain down to sit on the sill, measure 1cm (1/2") above for clearance or 15cm (6") below the sill if you want to exclude lights and draft.

If measuring the curtains to the floor, then allow 1.5cm (1/2") to prevent wear on the hems.

To complete the alteration simply choose the width that you want and then enter the drop size in.

Joining Pencil Pleat Curtains

  • All curtains will pattern match within the pair but not necessarily pattern match with the other pair bought.
  • Chiltern Mills will try to get the two 2 pairs to exact match but it may be necessary for one of the pairs ordered to be a longer drop to enable us to guarantee a pattern match.
  • Exact Colour Match within 2 pairs cannot be guaranteed but again we will try and ensure that there is a perfect colour match.
  • If the alteration team are unhappy with the pattern or colour match we will advise you accordingly as soon as we get the curtains.
